WHAT CAN BE DONE?

One place to start is to select appropriate vehicles that are suitable for the type of work you should expect your drivers to carry out. The selection of drivers is also important, and you should ensure that only fully trained, licensed, competent drivers are employed.

There are many ways to reduce the risk.

  • How you select and allocate company vehicles and driving duties.

  • Are face-to-face meetings, that require participants to drive, necessary, or could telephone or video conferencing be used instead?

  • Is driving the only option? Could other methods of transport be considered, or could the employee use public transport? Perhaps a delivery service could be used instead?

  • Avoid setting unrealistic delivery schedules or deadlines, which may encourage drivers to  exceed speed limits or take other risks.

  • Do not expect drivers to use their mobile phones whilst driving. if this is unavoidable, they must be provided with  an appropriate hands free set (See separate guidance on mobile phone use).
